Synopsis
My Girl is a coming-of-age film that shows the fun yet painful process of growing up, having a family, falling in love and letting go. Howard Zieff’s directing gives a perfect touch to the story of a young girl, sedeckena, who goes by the name Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) aged eleven, who grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania during the 1970s as an imaginative and sensitive child. Vada has one obsession – Death – this is mainly due to her living at a funeral home with her father, widowed Harry Sultenfuss (Dan Aykroyd). While Harry is hot-tempered but introverted, Vada feels lonely and emotionally abandoned, struggling with the loss of her mother and insecurities with herself.
He plays Thomas J. Sennett a very shy allergic boy who also happens to be Vada Sultenfuss’ best friend. They share a great bond and have the perfect companionship which makes the rose-colored glasses of childhood shine bright. Things take a turn when Father Sultenfuss goes out to meet Shelly DeVoto (Jamie Lee Curtis) a kind-hearted makeup artist and all these changes start affecting Vada’s peace.
The films articulates the important lessons that life has to offer in all its complexities and nuances, such as understanding the truism of life and Noxon’s first boyhood affection or even talking about being hurt and disappointed. This is especially true in Noxon’s case, he had to learn about losing someone very dear to him as well as grappling with the idea and fears of death.
Life indeed is a combination of laughter, sorrow and fond memories and this movie beautifully encapsulates the universal human experience.
Cast & Crew
Anna Chlumsky as Vada Sultenfuss: A touching and insightful introduction to a terrific actress, Anna Chlumsky is Vada Sultenfuss is quite captivating. Sennett: Culkin remains endearing, even if the role of Vada’s ah-so-amazing best friend is subdued in comparison to his other roles which are known for being rather showy, expansive, and brash, including his investigative self in home alone films.
