Summary:

Marvel Comics character Dr. Michael Morbius comes to life in Jared Leto’s portrayal in the movie Morbius, which is directed by Daniel Espinosa. The movie follows a theme of darkness as Morbius, who is a biochemist and suffers from a rare disease that poses a threat to his life, tries to cross ethical borders in medicine as he attempts to merge the DNA of a vampire bat with his own in order to cure himself.

His sheer willpower allows him to taste success in his experiments, and in return for the barbaric side effects, givers him the ability to fly, superhuman strength, echolocation, and super speed. But what he has to endure in return is terrifying, and its an agonizing thirst for human blood. He tries to battle his new persona of an actual vampire, and control his new impulses. This scenario becomes even messier as his brother figure, Milo who is played by Matt Smith, goes through the same experiment as Morbius and surrenders to his bloodlust. This leads the two childhood friends, now turned rivals, in a full on conflict.

Morbius’s thirst for human blood and feeling of loneliness propels him to search for people around that have been rejected by society. The Motion Picture investigates concepts which include, morality progress, sacrifice, and implications of scientific expansions.

Themes and Analysis:

  1. Identity and Transformation:

The duality of Morbius, as both a healer and a beast, displays a “monster in the closet” narrative. This internal mutation is an aberration in any unnatural tragedy not unlike those haunted by darkness in horror films but makes him Human after all.

  1. The Ethics of Science and Hubris:

The character Morbius forms a fine ethics regarding the acquisition of the profoundly altered state He sets. However the alteration done is for saving people and creates a new relentless predator instead. Here would be cautionary about ambition being prominent.

  1. Brotherly Rivalry and Isolation:

The neighbourhood which once united Milo and Morbius through their perseverance of pain divides them with regard to the hunger of power with sense or devoid of it. The Dark in Milo encourages him to overpower the sense while Morbius accross the limit seeks but does not surrender to blood lust. The feeling of pain in the other man prepares the ground for the sharpening feeling between the two men.

  1. Morality and Self-Control:

The film accomplishes the idea of self-control in the character Morbius who wantcha to do more bearable harm than his vampiric nature commands. On the other hand Milo unconfined into his need for blood would seek power for itself for the sake of having it and quite literally power devoid of moral guidance.

Visuals:

To better the Gothic feel of Morbius’ story, the film uses a gloomy and shadowy visual style. There is an increased use of slow-motion effects, especially during the scenes that demonstrate Morbius’ transformation and flight as new energy trails are unraveled, the result is both beautiful and terrifying. On the downside, too much CGI, especially in action scenes was considered bad because of its chaotic style.

The sheer urban chaos of New York City serves as the glaring distraction with Morbius at the center of it, accentuating on how alone he was in the cacophony. The clinical looking labs are antithetical to how the affliction of Morbius is portrayed visually.

Evaluation:

Owing to its uneven reception, the film Morbius stands with a rating of 5.2/10 on IMDB. The performance by Jared Leto was appreciated by some fans alongside the horror parts of the movie while the screenplay, with poorly formed character directions ,did not sit well with others as the pacing of the movie felt rushed.

The combination of superhero action with Gothic horror is attempted in the film, but as the critics point out, it is a juxtaposition whose tone is never quite the same through the movie. Interactions between Morbius and Milo were looked down upon as somewhat biological between the two, while the other side, the “living vampire” part of the story, was neglected and could have been worked on more.

Audience Reception:

Fans of the Spider-Man franchise enjoyed the movie’s connection to the Marvel universe, especially its potential for other characters crossover. On the other hand, normal viewers were disappointed with the film for its narrative flaws and its dependence on stereotypes.

Leto’s interpretation of Morbius as a gloomy anti-hero was met with mixed reactions with some people complimenting his passion while others finding it too dark. Viewers felt intrigued by the online teasers revealing upcoming arcs during the post-credit scenes but were perplexed by their abrupt ending.

Conclusion:

Morbius is a dark character film which aims to view the thin line of being a hero and being a monster. The film does have excellent cinematography and an impressive performance from Jared Leto, but the plot and tone of the movie is unbalanced which prevents it from being a memorable film for the superhero genre. While it is an interesting take on an underused Marvel character, it does provide an opportunity towards strengthening the “Sony Spider-Man Universe”
