Higop (Sip): A Love Story Laced With Lies
It is a romance, drama and everything in between directed by Topel Lee. Fans of the Filipino film industry will surely appreciate “Higop” which comes with a plot, setting and everything else that will deeply engross a viewer. In its very heart is a rather elusive gazebo which also symbolizes unsaid words lurking behind a milk tea intriguingly enough. Such overexposed narrations tend to move at a slower pace, but there’s definitely reason to look closer.
Plot Outline
This time Josefe Elizalde takes on the role of the male lead Noah, a man fully unable to move on from his ex girlfriend Ysa who is played by Angelica Hart. The plot together fates them once again when Noah our protagonist starts attending the milk tea shop at which Ysa used to work. He begins to hope that once again she will return and that’s where she will help him get Ariadne. However, this shop is everything but what it seems to be, underneath the warmth is a set of spine tingling secrets and scandals Ysa along with her co workers were working at the forefront of.
The progress of the story particularly the love in question does not seem prickled, so does Noah’s hope for Ysa but what appears next is the detailing of how reality for Noah and Ysa is so different and twisted and the emotions around it do serve to fuel Noah’s emotions redefining love for him.
Cast and Performances
- Angelica Hart as Ysa: Hart encapsulates the spirit of desire yet at the same time disillusionment with her character Ysa. The role feels both tender and sad at the same time due to its inner and external gaming and Ysa’s strengths and vulnerability.
- Josefe Elizalde as Noah: Elizalde adds levity and appeal to Noah’s character, who embarks on a love quest as always but has to grapple with the reality around him which is stark and bleak. Thus portraying him in a way which makes his journey more relatable and sad.
- Fabio Ide as Mond: Ide’s character Mond becomes a part of the narrative as an antaganist and in this light provides an ominous context in this narrative. As a part of the unseen forces mond manipulates and distorts the lives of the individuals in the shop.
Direction and Cinematography
Topel Lee’s cinematography immerses the audience into a robust and earthy aesthetic which adds greatness into the film. Controlling the use of light, intense close ups and darker colors creates a sense of suffocation with bleakness which further adds to the emotional turmoil of the characters. Slower paces combined with tight figuring builds up the tension and suspense because of the way the plot progresses.
The wire-leave cut for the character Hereit Kutula is masterful and pure.
Lee’s approach of introducing moral conflict alongside character work adds depth to the narrative allowing the audience to witness the gradual revelation of the messages along with the characters and the pay that they have to endure for it. His non-linear flow of events works with the reshape of the novel and elevates the intensity of the narrative since every insight feels like a missing piece of a greater story that is being put together.
Thematic and Critical Analysis
The story of “Higop” love, areter work. Therebottoms, and a portion of the heavily motivated socio-economic environment that surrounds poor countries. The film is based on the social work and at times the desire to be saved from being saved, the desire was within the savior. R –
The tear drop fountain as a prophetic image, signifies unattainable wishes, unsatisfied and terrible, gloomy promises, and more importantly, it ties in with the emotional anguish of the film, which revolves around Noah and the untaining settings of painful reality and being emotionally clutched by someone and making an effort to liberate them from the bond, accompanied by mental churn. Final Thoughts
The film Higop brings out a very close but, dark side of vision in a Contemporary Filipino Cinema where Love, Deceit and Morality exists. Yes, while there are people who would be put off global issues such as these due to the preferably dark themes, the film however asks us to think about the reasons as to why the people behave the way they do in relationship pulls and pushes. Higon explores this subject more fully with tightly woven and powerful narratives interspersed with chilling themes. The film drags people through difficult concepts handclassing raw emotions with hopelessness.
