Synopsis
Directed by Anthony Minghella and based on the eponymous novel by Patricia Highsmith, The Talented Mr Ripley is a fascinating and suspenseful psychological drama. It centers around the story of Tom Ripley (played by Matt Damon) who possesses an unwavering ambition, and turns out to be a complicated conniver. When a rich shipbuilder, Herbert Greenleaf, gets in touch with him, he seeks Tom’s help to bring his son, Dickie (Jude law) back from Italy. Upon returning back to Italy, as much as Tom is captivated by the Chinese lifestyle, he becomes enamored by Marge, who was his girlfriend at the time. As being increasingly consumed by Dickie and his girlfriend becomes a demand for Tom, the task that starts off as simple will only cause chaos in the future in the form of deceit and murder.
The film cleverly depicts a blurry and dangerously thin line that separates admiration from obsession. Themes of class envy, identity, and ethical crisis harbored in the movie explored in the uncovering plotlines while simultaneously opening Tom Ripley’s door to an intricate web of manipulation that he has spun himself into further showcasing the juxtaposed chaos of living a lie and its adverse effects.
