Themes and Analysis

Love and Obsession: “Decision to Leave” at its heart builds upon the intoxicating strength of love and the ways it can overshadow the rationality of a person creating boundaries that leads to unfathomable consequences.

Moral Ambiguity: While conflicting with duty and desires, characters are forced to live within the gray area of morality. This film explores that gray area.

Loneliness and Connection: Their marriage offers them love yet both Hae-jun and Seo-rae are yearning for relationships that give them the intimacy that they lack.

The Duality of Appearance: Seo-rae’s character examines how people can use deceitful appearance to conceal their real selves.

Cinematography and visual Style

The film’s visual language employs sophisticated synecdoche. The world within a frame is brought to life through careful compositions, rich colors, and active camera movements, all of which depict the characters’ states of mind. The mountains represent the film’s turmoil and emotional intensity while the darker parts of the city show the unsatisfaction and loneliness that lie in Hae-jun’s head. To reinforce the diviseness and falsehoods that govern Seo-rae’s life, the boundaries between reality and perspective are blurred with gentle cuts and the use of mirrors.
