Summarized Information
Director duo Anthony and Joe Russo present Captain America: Civil War (2016) a movie based on the heroic comics character, Captain America. MCU’s Captain America series places this film as its third installment with other already released films in consideration. After the consequences of battles involving major Avengers, governments and their people faced disasters. To help resolve the issues, The United Nations suggested the Sokovia Accords, which further banned superheroes from working on their own accord. This shattered the Avengers in two, fans still saw their idols engaging into brawls with one another; Captain America aka Steve Rogers portrayed by Chris Evans along with Iron Man aka Tony Stark portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.
The plot becomes more intricate when Steve’s best friend Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier portrayed by Sebastian Stan is accused of setting off a terrorist attack. In a desperate move to save his friend Bucky, Steve opposes the government while Tony believes the government must be supported instead. What started off as an ideological difference intensified into a fight at a German airport as both sides ideated on recruiting allies for themselves. And unlike the fight that ensued between Steve and Tony, these differences proved personal and treacherous as they exposed the Avengers’ clandestine facets.
Cast & Crew
Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America: Evans strikes a troublesome role as Steve who is always determined in the belief of his conscience and loyalty to his comrades which undeniably places him in a conflicting scenario.
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man: Unlike Evans, Downey has a reputable extensive sense of control over his emotions and greatly portrays Tony Stark as an in grief man with some humour in his character.
Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier: Stan genuinely emphasizes on the recluse that Bucky works hard trying to make amends against the individuals that are opposed to him while tackling a fractured image of who he is.
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow: A complexity is surely added to Natasha each time she is forced to make a decision on fostering any relationships with other characters and prevents them from engaging in an all out combat to solve their issues.
Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Falcon: Mackie actively portrays Sam as someone who’s always there to support Steve no matter the circumstances portraying a strong sense of loyalty towards him while still being comedic relief at the same time.
Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa / Black Panther: After losing his parental figure, Boseman interestingly plays an avenging king of Wakanda with a serene sense of justice aiding him in carrying out his plans.
Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man: For Holland’s first time in the role, he is filled with Spidey-like goofiness and a certain level of charm that easily compliments with his combination of humor and super-heroism.
Direction and Visual Style
With Anthony and Joe Russo at the helm, the movie expertly incorporates touching character moments within the most extreme set-pieces. The choreography of the battle sequences, especially the one set at the airport, incorporates comedy and a sense of participatory emotional involvement. Realism lies in the shaky Nature Capture techniques used by the Russo brothers where combined with traditional practical effects softens the close hand to hand combat making it feel even more alive then it would be.
Themes and Analysis
- Ideological Conflict:
At its very essence Civil War is an argument on the essence of being free or secure. Steve regards individual liberty essential and has an aversion to large structures like the Government due to his encounters with HYDRA who had meandered within S.H.I.E.L.D. On the other hand, Tony believes regulation can avert further catastrophes due to his memories after contributing to destruction. This divide is more than a petty difference of opinion, it is being actively discussed in the world in respect of governance and individual freedom.
- Slagging and Devotion :
The core conflict between Steve and Bucky places great emphasis on the film’s themes of loyalty and forgiveness. In the eyes of the viewers, the fact that Steve is willing to go at great lengths to rescue Bucky from being a hostile, explains why loyalty to a friend can sometimes contradict the allegiance to the greater good.
- Justice and Retaliation :
T’Challa’s shift from seeking revenge to upholding justice is perhaps the strongest turmoil for any character in the movie. T’Challa, is first driven by an urge for revenge that ensues after his father’s death, but in the end opts for mercy, unlike Tony who gets angry about learning about Bucky’s involvement in the death of his parents.
- Functional Casualties of Warfare:
Inevitably, the ‘scattered’ and split up society is one of the main dire consequences of a battle, and so this is what the film seeks to convey to the audience unlike the rest of the MCU movies which focus on the Avengers battles. The greatest example of this accountability motivation is the opening operation in Lagos and the destruction of Sokovia where the civilization lost a lot of lives and even heroes can have unintended consequences.
Cinematography and Action Sequences
Marvel Studios managed to exceed their expectations by releasing some of the best action scenes in Civil war, especially the airport combat which had loads of action and amusing moments in it, to the point it took ones breath away. Spider-mans introduction and Ant Mans shift into giant man were tough not to be amused by. Nonetheless, the last confront in the movie, which involved Steve, Bucky and Tony, was rugged and emotional, which led to a wider story in hand.
Critical Reception
According to IMDb Captain America Civil War is ranked at 8.2/10. Critics were quick in appreciating the production for clearly defining the huge ensemble and retaining the story on track. The actors and actresses won praise for their performances especially Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr and Chadwick Boseman. The right amount of heart and emotion along with action is what made the movie to be ruthless in the marvel franchise.
Then again some critics were annoyed by Spider-man and Black Panther’s introduction saying that it was unnecessary as they were primarily meant for future films rather then the current storyline of the movie, this is what led to them saying that the movie focused on too many plots that it lost its emotional essence.
Audience Reception
The grounded approach of the movie that examined the notions of friendship and responsibility deeply was appreciated by the audience and so were the grownup themes of the film and the invested emotional elements of the movie. The inclusion of Black Panther and Spider-Man was very much exciting and especially Bosman’s breathtaking performance as T’Challa.
Though a few viewers argued that the lack of a clear antagonist in the movie made the conflict feel subdued in comparison to the other movies in the MCU. Others argued about the great emotional impact and devastation among the Avengers, Civil War was the first step towards the break up of the team that led to the Infinity War.
Conclusion
Captain America: Civil War is the perfect example of how to successfully combine fast-paced action with elongated character progression and great overarching themes. The movie combines how intellectual differences between characters and the issue of personal loyalty to a character can become very complex and is more than just another superhero movie which is the reason why it’s a terrific installment in the MCU. The unique characters, great action, emotional weight of the storyline and the sheer cinematic experience presented to the viewers makes Civil war a great film and I doubt it not a fan-favorite.
