Bad Genius

Synopsis

Bad Genius is a 2017 Thai heist thriller by Nattawut Poonpiriya that interlaces intense dramatic flair with social commentary like an intricate tapestry. The plot is centered on a high school student Lynn, an economics major intending to graduate from a poor family background that is competing against upper class students who want to outsmart him in every possible way. Lynn devises a way to turn her education into money.

The events of the movie take off when she helps her best friend Grace to pass the school exam, which leads to an entire side job involving multiple students. Like any business, an empire of cheating systems came into existence after being by Bank, another genius student who is initially morally against the scheme. Tactics hit their peak during attempts to outdo the international STIC (Standard Test for International Colleges) which all countries cheat to simultaneously administrate. Lynn and Bank take a substantial risk by attempting to plan and execute the scheme committing global timing, flawless execution, and precision.

The narrative particularly deals with classism, ethics, and the social burden of a world consumed by high competitive standards within the academic field. Being well paced with a defined governing structure and complex twisting plots, as well as fervid rhythms, Bad Genius is built to defy the viewers expectations on what is right and wrong.

Cast & Crew

Lynn: Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying returns to the screen as Lynn and introduces us to young brilliant and cunning student who is torn between conscience and wise validation due to the targeting of a poor economic situation.

Lynn schemes using Bank’s meticulous personality and sets him on a guilt trip. Bank, played by Chanon Santinatornkul, becomes an unintentional co-conspirator to Lynn’s plans and has to deal with the aftermath.

Grace, Lynn’s privileged friend, acts carelessly and sets into motion the scheme. Eisaya Hosuwan plays the role of Grace.

Pat is the boyfriend of Grace and like other characters in the film, he is also problematic in nature. Pat, played by Teeradon Supapunpinyo, pulls Lynn deeper into the scheme due to his entitled nature and his unwillingness to accept failure.

The combination of seamless visuals, sharp editing, and pulse pounding background music, increases the suspense during the entire film. Nattawut Poonpiriya, the director, manages to do this flawlessly with the rest of the team.

Contradicting Class Systems and Privilege: Through the varying class systems, the film displays how Lynn and Bank have to sacrifice their moral principles to gain wealth while certain students buy their success.

Moral Ambiguity: Bad Genius is a film that makes its viewers ponder where do you draw the line with certain actions. While Lynn’s actions/ schemes are illegal, the motivation for them stem from inequality in the system.

The film reflects a wide range of real life problems within the education system across the globe and one of the problems is the pressure of education and competition to outdo one another due to the expectation society places on people.

Lynn and her team display creativity along with determination as they outsmart what seems to be impossible odds. This along with the rest of the film, marks the celebration of innovation and teamwork.

Cinematography and Visual Style

Phaklao Jiraungkoonkun, the film’s director of photography, utilizes dynamic, calculated movements of the camera to capture Lynn’s high-strung and systematic mannerisms. The exam sequences are set to frenetic editing which, along with high-contrast lighting, heightens the emotions and transforms a simple test into an exhilarating experience. The sets are built to reinforce the gap between the rich and poor which is clearly portrayed by Lynn’s house and his surrounding.
